『小学館-ケンブリッジ英英和辞典』

Cambridge Learner's Dictionaryに、ごく簡潔な和訳を掲載（ISBN:4095100710）。 CD-ROM付き（原書と同じもの）。2色刷。928ページ。新語として「SARS」も載っている。原書が780ページなので、和訳を載せた分で148ページ増えている。ただ、原書で存在した原著編纂者のまえがきがなく、投野由紀夫氏のまえがきと入れ換えられているのは残念。原著のまえがきは削除してほしくなかった。
では、どれぐらいの「英和辞典機能」があるか見てみることにしよう。たとえば、「bind」の項は以下のようになっている（記号類は省く。語義のみ）。

2.　to force someone to keep a promise　　（約束などで）縛る

4.　to fasten together pages to meke a book　　製本する

噂には聞いていたが、これを「英英和辞典」という書名にするのはちょっときびしい。オンライン書店から届き、開けてみてビックリ、怒り出す人がいてもおかしくはない。雑誌に内容見本を掲載していなかった理由もよくわかった。これでは、昔の実用国語辞典によく載っていた「和英機能」と変わらない。（追記：いまAmazon.co.jp を見たら、酷評されていた。）
しかし、個人的には悪くないと思う。「検索しやすいから」というのがその理由だ。あとは、ど忘れしているときの助けになるとかあるが、どっちにしてもその程度のものだ。もう少しまともな「英和機能」を載せたらあと数百ページは増えたはずだ。本当は、Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary のほうでやってほしかった。もちろん、書名から「和」は外してほしい（見栄にならないから）。
