insightの訳語

　insightという語はどうも訳しづらい。辞書を引いても「洞察」「見識」などというわかりづらい訳語が並んでいる。（中略）

The dementia associated with Alzheimer's disease is particularly distressing for those who care for the patient. The patients lose memory and intellectual function and ▼have little insight into their illness▼; they are unable to recognize close family or friends; they may develop unpleasant and distressing psychotic and aggressive behaviour, and yet at first show little or no sign of physical illness. (Leslie Iversen (2001) Drugs: A Very Short Introduction. p.119)

この文章に出てくるinsightは「洞察」や「見識」と訳しても意味不明である（もっとも，認知症に関して「見当識」が問題となることはあるが）。下線部［▼〜▼］を訳すなら，「自分の病気のことがほとんどわからない」といったところになるだろう。

　例によって英英辞典を引いてみよう。COBUILDを見ると，If you gain insight or an insight into a complex situation or problem, you gain an accurate and deep understanding of it.とある。たしかにaccurate / deepという修飾語はついているが，要するにunderstandingということだ。さらにLDOCEを見ると，the ability to understand and realize what people or situations are really likeとあり，この意味は上記引用にかなり正確に対応するように思える。英和辞典にも「十分にわかること」といった訳語を加えたほうがよいのではないだろうか。
